GA4 Default Channel Group Tools
Everyone uses UTM parameters. Not everyone gets them right.
GA4 classifies traffic into default channel groups such as Paid Search, Organic Social, Email, and Referral. That classification depends on your utm_source, utm_medium, campaign details, referrer data, and ad platform integrations. When those values don't match GA4's channel rules, your traffic ends up in Unassigned or gets attributed to the wrong marketing channel.
Google documents how GA4 default channel grouping works, but the rules aren't easy to find or apply. Most UTM builders give you fields for source, medium, and campaign, but they don't tell you which values to use if you want GA4 to classify the traffic correctly.
I built these tools after a training session where someone discovered their email signature traffic was landing in Unassigned. The links were tagged, but the source and medium values didn't match what GA4 expected. The traffic wasn't gone, but it was buried in the wrong channel and invisible in their reporting.
This kind of misattribution quietly biases your data. Google Ads traffic benefits from auto-tagging and direct platform integration, while every other channel relies on you getting the UTM parameters right. Get them wrong and email, social, partner, affiliate, and other non-Google activity is underreported across GA4 reports and attribution models.
Which GA4 default channel group will my URL land in?
Paste a URL with UTM parameters to see which default channel group GA4 would put it in, and why.
What UTM parameters does each channel group need?
Sometimes it's easier to start from where you want the traffic to land.
Pick a channel group and this tool shows you what to put in your URL.
Build UTM-tagged URLs for the right channel group
Need to tag a batch of URLs? Pick a channel group per row and the tool locks the fields GA4 requires, then generates the tagged URL for you. Download as CSV when you're done.
